ThisDay 'Wrap Around' Wahala

ThisDay newspaper arrived yesterday, wrapped in this advert placed by the 3rd Term champaigners. Everyone was up in arms, PC said he couldn't touch the paper. This was the ultimate betrayal, how could ThisDay do this, sell out its front and back pages, those very pages it used to denounce this 3rd term nonsense? Segun Adeniyi felt he owed the readership and explanation so the paper ran this editorial today.

I'm not sure if it is to Voltaire (Fran├žois-Marie Arouet), or to Evelyn Beatrice Hall that we may attribute the quote "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it", but it sure dimensions ThisDay's dilemma over publicity for the third term agenda, for me.

Along with impunity, a key characteristic of the public space in Nigeria, is a frightening refusal to tolerate dissenting opinion by those who peradventure have secured access to and use of this space. Yet, the values that define any people, and those towards which they aspire can only legitimately be the product of intense and extensive social intercourse.

Deny to one perspective access to the public domain; and that domain is diminished in equal measure.

Nazism? Race-hate? Pornography?

I still puke at that ThisDay edition.
